How to Fish: Multiplayer & Co-op Guide
How to Fish supports up to 4-player co-op. This guide covers how co-op changes the game and how to actually work as a team — instead of just shooting each other.
Co-op basics
Up to 4 players can fish together on the same island. The whole sandbox — fishing, gambling, quests, boss fights, seagull harassment — plays out in shared multiplayer, which is where the game's reputation for chaos comes from.
What changes in multiplayer
- Boss fish have more targets to pick from — and fights scale into proper group chaos.
- Misfires happen. The game deliberately has friendly-fire moments; expect accidental (and "accidental") team shots.
- Gambling with friends turns the catch-gambling table into group drama.
- Seagulls don't care how many of you there are — someone should be on bird duty.
Team strategies that work
- Split roles: one player on guns (damage), one on nets (securing the catch), one managing the boat. Bosses go down much faster with roles than with four people doing the same thing.
- Pool money for boat upgrades — the whole group benefits from new islands, so upgrade the boat before personal gear.
- Gamble as a group — one person gambles, everyone else watches the seagulls.
- Revive/protect the money carrier — if someone's holding the session's best catch, escort them to the shop.
Friendly fire is real
Japanese outlets noted at launch that misfires are part of the fun ("誤射もある無法漁師生活" — roughly, "an outlaw fisherman's life with friendly fire"). Keep these in mind:
- Don't stand between a friend and a fish. Ever.
- 360° no-scope trick shots are impressive until they hit your teammate.
- If a friend "accidentally" shoots you after you stole their catch — that's a feature.
